This month is teacher apreciation month here at the Grove School of Plano. Each day we are taking a moment to express how important each of our teachers are to us and the families we serve. Last week our parents hosted a variety of activities such as a teachers breakfast, snack-o-rama day and our very own teacher luncheon. The day of the teachers luncheon each teacher was presented with a special gift basket that all of their parents donated items for. The teachers were so surprised and felt so appreicated! The parents also  took a moment to share how special their child’s teacher is to them by writing a special note. Each note placed on each teachers classroom “I inspire Learning” posters for the teachers to view. The messages were so heartfelt and brought some teachers to tears.

A huge Thank You to all of the families for all that you did to make this month a very special time for our team!

It was such a treat to have all of the wonderful ladies in our student’s lives come and visit us for a special afternoon at The Grove School of Cary!

Our infant room is finally up and running and we have enjoyed it so much!  We have been spending time getting to know our new infants and helping them adjust and socialize with each other.  With our curriculum being individualized to each child, it has given us a chance to truly focus on the needs and skill level of the child and help them succeed in their own way.  They have been doing great and it is so fun to watch them grow on a daily basis!

In strands we are discussing different types of insects and arachnids as well as learning about the seasons through songs, pictures, games, and understanding graphs.  It is spring, and because of the beautiful weather we have been going outside much more to work on our garden and compost pile! We are also learning some new yoga poses and I will have the children learn Tai Chi so we can learn to move our bodies like nature.  One of the most exciting aspects this month about strands is the preschool classes will be putting on a play at the end of the month called “How Crocodile Got A Bumpy Back”! The pre-kindergarten class is working together to write their own dialogue for the Ashanti tale “Anansi and Turtle”!

This is a very exciting month.

During the month of May, Pre-K will cover two units: Wild Animals and Water. During the Wild Animals unit, we will paint an animal mural, make animals out of tangrams, create “My Favorite Animal” books, and make our own Zoo in dramatic play. The Water unit will be during our last two weeks of Pre-K. Can you believe we are already here?! While we study and play with water in its various forms, we will also prepare for our Graduation Ceremony, which is May 31st at 6:30 pm. After graduation, we will have one more week of Pre-K before Summer Camp starts. During this week, we are going to celebrate with a party theme! Please sign up for Summer Camp by graduation, so we can get a count of who will be here to travel the biomes of the Earth with us this summer!

This month Preschool will be exploring the sky and wild animals.

 

Throughout history, people of all ages have experienced wonder and have asked questions about the sky. This unit, “The Sky,” offers children the opportunity to learn about a variety of sky-related topics. Clouds, birds, and wind are three of the many related areas of interest that this unit will explore. Throughout the unit, we will read and explore sky themed books, including “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” by Charles G. Shaw.

 

Children are fascinated with animals. They typically enjoy learning about all kinds of animals, and most children maintain a high degree of interest when discussing animals. This unit, “Wild Animals,” covers a wide range of animals including those found in the jungle, forest, and even in children’s own backyards! This unit we will read a variety of jungle themed books, including the unit’s featured book “Wild Animals and Their Colors” by Stephanie Maze.

We often exhibit curiosity about creepy, crawly, creatures, and this unit, “Insects and Spiders”, will provide us with opportunities to further develop those interests! The unit starts with activities related to spiders as well as size concepts, such as little and big. We will continue our learning though activities related to ladybugs, caterpillars, and butterflies. The unit concludes with a look at ants, bees, and grasshoppers. Through an array of math activities focused on size recognition, shape identification and sequencing, we will explore a variety of insects and spiders. We will also expand our language skills as we sing songs, learn new rhymes, and tell stories. We will be encouraged to express our creativity as we paint, dance, and role-play, all the while learning about interesting bugs. In dramatic play there will be a garden which we will plant and sow seeds in. In creative arts we will work on ribbon and yarn art to create collages and spider webs which will help enhance our fine-motor skills. In science/sensory we will be examining pretend insects with magnifying glasses. In blocks we will create insect homes, but be careful not to knock them down! In math/manipulatives we will use pegs and pegboards to build on counting skills as we count the number of pegs on the boards. In library/language arts we will use insect and spider stamps as enhancements to our stories! We look forward to exploring this unit with you!
